The present is the only moment you have any power.

When you’re in the moment, you’re not thinking about the past or the future. You’re not worried about what other people think of you. You’re not worried about what you should be doing. You’re just present. It sounds so simple, but it’s actually very difficult to do. We are constantly bombarded with distractions that pull us out of the moment. Our phones are ringing, emails are pinging, and we’re constantly thinking about what we need to do next.

True presence is about being fully in the moment, without any distractions. It’s about being completely focused on what you’re doing, and being present in your interactions with others.

When you’re present, you’re more likely to notice the little things that make life beautiful. You’re more likely to appreciate the moment, and the people you’re sharing it with.

If you’re finding it difficult to be present, there are a few things you can do to help yourself

  • First, turn off all distractions. Put down your phone, and step away from your computer. If you can, find a quiet place to sit, and just focus on your breath.
  • Second, focus on your senses. What do you see, hear, and feel in the moment? Really take in your surroundings, and savor the experience.
  • Third, practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the act of being fully aware of your thoughts and feelings, without judgment. When you’re mindful, you’re able to observe your thoughts and feelings, without getting caught up in them.
  • Fourth, be kind to yourself. If you find yourself getting caught up in your thoughts, or you’re having trouble being present, don’t be hard on yourself. Just gently bring your attention back to the present moment.

True presence is a state of mind that takes practice. But the more you focus on being present, the easier it will become. And the more present you are, the more you’ll be able to enjoy the beauty of life.

Start by making a conscious effort to be present in your life, and then keep at it.

With time and practice, you’ll be able to develop a deeper sense of presence.
